Classified sites like Armslist made it easy to find guns for sale near you. What they do not do is protect either side of the deal. Armslist’s own FAQ says it does not handle payments, guarantee transactions, provide escrow or offer buyer protection. Everything after the ad (payment, meeting, paperwork) is up to two people who have never met. Here is how to get the benefits of private-party buying and selling without the risks.
The three risks of classified-ad gun deals
1. Payment scams
Online sellers who demand gift cards, wire transfers or crypto, and buyers who send fake payment confirmations, are the most common firearm scams. With no escrow, once money or a gun changes hands there is no one to appeal to.
2. Unsafe meetups
Meeting a stranger in a parking lot with a gun and a pocket full of cash is a bad combination. Armed robberies set up through classified ads are a known risk.
3. Legal exposure
Private sales across state lines must go through a licensed dealer, and many states require background checks for in-state private sales too. Selling to someone who cannot legally own a firearm can expose a seller to serious consequences, and in a cash meetup you have no way to know who you are dealing with.
A safer way to do private-party deals
- Use escrow for payment. The buyer pays GunTab, GunTab tells the seller it is safe to ship, and pays the seller after shipment. See gun escrow explained.
- Run every firearm through an FFL. Shipping to the buyer’s dealer, or meeting at a dealer for a local transfer, means a background check is done and the paperwork is handled. See FFL transfers explained.
- Keep communication on the marketplace. Messages tied to a listing create a record, and suspicious users can be reported.
- Deal with approved accounts. On Liberty Gun Trader, accounts are reviewed before members can list, bid or make offers, and FFL dealers are verified.
How Liberty Gun Trader is different from classified sites
| Classified ad sites | Liberty Gun Trader | |
|---|---|---|
| Payment | Arranged between strangers | Built-in checkout with GunTab escrow or card |
| Firearm transfer | Up to the parties | Every firearm goes through a licensed dealer |
| Accounts | Anyone can post | Accounts reviewed; FFLs verified |
| Local search | Yes | Yes, by distance from your ZIP, plus nationwide shipping |
| Auctions and offers | No | Yes |
| Cost to sell | Free basic ads | Free during launch, no commission |
Still want to buy locally?
You can. Search by distance on the marketplace, and when a listing offers local pickup, choose it at checkout. Payment is settled before you meet, and the handoff happens at a licensed dealer.
Checklist for any private-party firearm deal
- Confirm the buyer or seller is who they say they are.
- Never pay with gift cards, crypto, wire transfers or “friends and family” payments.
- Use escrow or pay in person at a dealer.
- Transfer through an FFL, even when your state does not require it.
- Keep a written record: date, item, serial number, price, and the other party’s details.
